I have the honour to request your

covering authority for the grant to the Young Men's

Christian Association of Hong Kong of an area of land

shown coloured red on the enclosed plan and subject

to the terms and conditions of which a copy is attached.

2.

The building which the Association propose

to erect is for the 'Cheero' Club. A club of this

name was first started in 1928 for the benefit of the

Shanghai Defence Force, but it was such a success and

was so much appreciated by the Services that it was

continued after that emergency had passed. Accommodation

was provided at a nominal rental by the City Hall

Committee in a portion of the old City Hall. When

that building was condemned last year the Club had to

vacate, and since then has been unable to find suitable

premises within its means, for it is essential that it

should be centrally and conveniently located.

3.

The area, part of which it is now proposed

to grant to the Association, which will run the Club,

has recently been surrendered to this Government by the

Military Authorities against a credit in the Colonial

Military Lands account. It is therefore not inappropriate

that

SIR P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER, G.B.E., M.C., M.P.,
